  2. Culture, heritage, and diversity in older adult mental health care

    • Ebog

Culture, heritage, and diversity in older adult mental health care

    2019
    First edition
Summary: "Health care organizations are beginning to recognize the importance of cultural competence as it relates to efficiency, quality, and equity in the delivery of care within a competitive health care market, and Culture, Heritage, and Diversity in Older Adult Mental Health Care is designed to train mental health clinicians to deliver culturally sensitive care to an increasingly diverse patient population. Projections indicate that 35% of patients older than age 65 will be from a racial or ethnic minority group by 2050, compared with 11% in 1970. Today's mental health practitioners require knowledge, sensitivity, and an understanding of institutionalized practices and systems that undermine their patients' health and well-being. The term culture is multifaceted and may refer to one's belief system, values, religion, race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, geographic location, educational level, age, occupational risks and exposures, and gender. The authors of the book examine mental health care through these lenses, teaching the reader about implicit biases and potential miscommunication and offering strategies for overcoming these difficulties"--Publisher's description

  7. Wounds of war : how the VA delivers health, healing, and hope to the nation's veterans

    • Ebog

Wounds of war : how the VA delivers health, healing, and hope to the nation's veterans

    2018
Summary: "The book looks at the largest hospital system in the country, the Veterans Healthcare Administration--one that has come under fire from critics in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in the nation's media. The author spent five years closely observing the VHA's treatment of patients suffering from service related injuries, physical and mental. This book describes how the VHA, tasked with a challenging patient population, does a better job than private sector institutions offering primary and geriatric care, mental health and home care services, and support for patients nearing the end of life. It explores how the resulting public debate about the future of veterans' health care has pitted VHA patients and their care-givers against politicians and policy-makers who believe that former military personnel would be better served by private health care providers"

  8. A Canadian healthcare innovation agenda : policy, governance, and strategy

    • Ebog

A Canadian healthcare innovation agenda : policy, governance, and strategy

    2018
Summary: "This collection features original chapters from academics and healthcare leaders that address a range of policy issues: the meaning of healthcare innovation; how a national healthcare agency and investment fund could be governed; the nature of implications of big data and evidence; how to add value through Canadian supply-chain management; how to overcome regulatory barriers to innovation; policy innovation for indigenous, military and elderly populations; the role of the medical professions in promoting innovation, education and the development of healthcare innovators. While the Canadian healthcare system is so fragmented that many analysts argue that a system-wide strategy for healthcare innovation is a distant ideal, this book presents a contrary view by showing that Canadians do indeed have the building blocks for innovation."

  10. Africa and global health governance : domestic politics and international structures

Africa and global health governance : domestic politics and international structures

    2018
Summary: Global health campaigns, development aid programs, and disaster relief groups have been criticized for falling into colonialist patterns, running roughshod over the local structure and authority of the countries in which they work. Far from powerless, however, African states play complex roles in health policy design and implementation. In Africa and Global Health Governance, Amy S. Patterson focuses on AIDS, the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak, and noncommunicable diseases to demonstrate why and how African states accept, challenge, or remain ambivalent toward global health policies, structures, and norms. Employing in-depth analysis of media reports and global health data, Patterson also relies on interviews and focus-group discussions to give voice to the various agents operating within African health care systems, including donor representatives, state officials, NGOs, community-based groups, health activists, and patients. Showing the variety within broader patterns, this clearly written book demonstrates that Africa's role in global health governance is dynamic and not without agency. Patterson shows how, for example, African leaders engage with international groups, attempting to maintain their own leadership while securing the aid their people need. Her findings will benefit health and development practitioners, scholars, and students of global health governance and African politics
