The most common arguments against immigration and why they're wrong

    2021
Summary: "Immigrants are going to take American jobs." "They're going to commit crimes." "They won't learn English." We've heard it all. The Most Common Arguments Against Immigration and Why They're Wrong contains the 15 most common arguments against immigration and Cato Institute scholar Alex Nowrasteh's responses to them.Immigration has been the most hotly debated public policy issue in the United States since Donald Trump entered the Republican primary in mid-2015. 5. Immigration detention and enforcement

    • Ebog

    Immigration detention and enforcement

    2021
Summary: The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) authorizes--and in some cases requires--the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain non-U.S. nationals (aliens) arrested for immigration violations that render them removable from the United States. An alien may be subject to detention pending an administrative determination as to whether the alien should be removed, and, if subject to a final order of removal, pending efforts to secure the alien's removal from the United States. The immigration detention scheme is multifaceted, with different rules that turn on several factors, such as whether the alien is seeking admission into the United States or has been lawfully admitted into the country; whether the alien has engaged in certain proscribed conduct; and whether the alien has been issued a final order of removal. In many instances DHS maintains discretion to release an alien from custody. But in some instances, such as when an alien has committed specified crimes, the governing statutes have been understood to allow release from detention only in limited circumstances. This book focuses on current topics concerning immigration detention and enforcement

  6. Keeping Canada running : infrastructure and the future of governance in a pandemic world

    • Ebog

Keeping Canada running : infrastructure and the future of governance in a pandemic world

    2021
Summary: "Promises to "build back better" and "build back green" highlight opportunities to reimagine Canadian infrastructure. In this groundbreaking study, authors Bruce Doern, Christopher Stoney, and Robert Hilton provide the first comprehensive overview of Canadian infrastructure policy, examining the impact and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and rapid technological change as Canada looks to recover and rebuild. Covering more than fifty years across many sectors, the authors identify numerous challenges that have contributed to Canada's growing infrastructure deficit and suboptimal outcomes including political interference in the choice of infrastructure projects; challenges for multilevel governance including distortion of local priorities, blurred accountability, and unsustainable maintenance costs for municipalities; the growing reliance on public-private partnerships that limit transparency and public scrutiny; and increased corruption associated with infrastructure projects. Transforming infrastructure is notoriously difficult yet vital at a time of rapid technological change. It is estimated that 75 percent of the infrastructure that will exist in 2050 does not exist today. This makes it crucial that Canada invest in future-proof infrastructure with the capacity to facilitate economic growth and expanding urban centres, mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change, and ensure resilience in response to crises and disasters. Keeping Canada Running offers a timely assessment of these issues, Canada's COVID-19 response, and the potential contribution of the newly launched Canadian Infrastructure Bank."
